Shack Upgrade
Following my own new rule to only buy used computer gear whenever possible, I’ve decided to upgrade my shack by finally adding a dedicated shack PC and monitors. Being a big fan of the Dell Wyse 5070 thin client which I already use as a cheap low-power Proxmox server, I’ve bought another one for 45€ incl. shipping for the new shack PC with the following specifications:
- Celeron(R) J4105 CPU @ 1.50GHz
- 8GB SO-DIMM DDR4 RAM
- 64GB SSD
- 5W idle power consumption
Since I wanted to have a monitor connected to the Yaesu FT-710 as a bigger display, the idea was to purchase two identical screens that can be connected to the radio and the PC. The FT-710 only has a DVI port which is badly implemented by Yaesu and can lead to a damaged radio if you use a HDMI-to-DVI adapter. So I decided to get older monitors with native DVI ports and ended up buying two used Acer B223WL 22" screens with a resolution of 1680x1050 for 29€ each. This is my shack now in all its glory:
