Logitech MX Ergo: Replacing the button switches
Posted on 2025-05-09I recently noticed that the buttons on my Logitech MX Ergo trackball kept causing problems. To be more precise, the buttons would occasionally lose contact while I was holding them down. This led to unwanted effects when dragging and dropping as well as copying text. I therefore decided to swap the two microswitches of the left and right buttons.
After the OMRON microswitches I ordered on ebay arrived, I started replacing them:
- switch off the trackball
- remove the magnetic plate at the bottom of the trackball
- remove the ball
- remove all six Torx T6 screws
- carefully separate the two halves of the housing
- pull the mouse wheel upwards with a little force
- disconnect all three ribbon cables
- remove the small circuit board to the left of the left mouse button (1 Phillips screw)
- remove the bowl for the ball (2 Phllips screws)
- unscrew the battery holder (3 Phillips screws)
- remove the main PCB (4 Phillips screws)
- desolder both switches. I was lazy and simply cut the old switches into 3 parts with a side cutter and desoldered each part individually
- solder in the new switches
- reassemble everything in reverse order
All in all, the repair took about 45 minutes and only cost a few euros. The buttons work again as they did on the first day and both the wallet was spared and the environment saved from electronic waste.
